GREAT 2014: Women Entrepreneur Track

The GREAT™ 2014 event (Gathering of Rising Entrepreneurs Act Together) is the ultimate gathering of Malaysian entrepreneurs, startups and funders. This 4-day festival allows aspiring entrepreneurs to tap into and interact with the ecosystem. Gorgeous Geeks, in collaboration with Women Google Business Group (GBG Women), will be organising the Women Entrepreneur track as part of the GREAT™ 2014 event.

The Women Entrepreneur track aims to help women entrepreneurs, women in tech positions, and women leaders leverage on technology to kickstart and grow their businesses by improving business and technical skills, as well as online strategies. We hope to provide a fun learning experience tailored for women entrepreneurs, women leaders and women in technology. Her experiences include Strategic Enterprise Management, Business Values of IT, BPR, Knowledge Management, e-Business Initiatives & Strategic Consultancy for the industry sector of Education, manufacturing, Logistics & FSI.

    Alecia is a Business Architect by profession and had been practising as a Business Solution Architect since the early day of her career. As a Business Architect, her expertise is to assist corporate to amplify their business value for their technology investment by looking into various aspect of the business and IT solution. Alecia is also the author of 2 popular training courses which are part of the IASA Official Curriculum i.e. 2-Days on Business Requirement Architecture and 3-days on Architecting Software with Object Oriented Analysis and Design.

    Alecia is also the Co-founder and President of Gorgeous Geeks Asia Pacific. Gorgeous Geeks (www.gorgeousgeeks.org) is a women interest group that aim to provide mentorship and support for women in the ICT industry as well as to inspire other women to use technology for their business and career.

    Alecia is frequent public speakers in the IT & Business conferences across region. She appears regularly in the media like television, newspaper, magazine and radio station to share her view on women and technology. She has been recognized for her “Outstanding Career Achievements and Contribution to Society in the Technology Sector” by The Malaysian Women’s Weekly Great Women of Our Time Award 2008.

    Carol is known for selling her ribbons & safety pins in eBay and now she trains entrepreneurs in Malaysia on how to bring their businesses from offline to online.

    She is also a Certified Trainer By eBay SEA (South East Asia) which allows her to teach and provide trainings to individuals or companies in using eBay as a platform to trade online. To date, she has taught over 5,000 people from all walks of life in Malaysia and Singapore about ‘How to start their business in eBay’ since 2006.

    In August 2013, MPH Publishing Group published a book she wrote called ‘Master Class Series: Carol Fung’s Guide to Online Retailing”. During her book launch, Dato’ Hafsah Hashim (CEO of SME Corporation Malaysia – SMECorp) was invited to officiate her book in front of 100’s of entrepreneur & press. Her book has been reviewed as one of the easiest guide book to follow specially for newbies who wants to start their online business. Carol’s Guide Book was awarded ‘Best Sellers of 2013’ by MPH, one of the most sort after book in MPH’s Masterclass Series. Her guidebook is currently on its 5th reprint.
    Currently, she is with MDeC (Multimedia Development Corporation), a government agency under the Ministry of Communications & Multimedia as a Manager for Special Projects for the SME Community & Innovation.

    Carol’s passion to help entrepreneur (big or small) to realise their business digitally. She is known for her knowledge sharing in the industry she is well versed in.

    Madam Fadzilah Ahmad Din is the Principle Consultant at Collective Intelligence Consultancy. She possesses deep insight and experience in the areas of entrepreneurship and enterprise development, particularly in capacity building of SMEs, as well as SME policy development.
    Previously she served as Senior Director Business Development Division, SME Corp. Malaysia (2007-2013), where she was the key resource person developing and leading various programmes for SME Corp, which include. among others:

     

    • the development of the methodology of SME Competitive Rating for Enhancement (SCORE), which is now used as the National audit/assessment tool for SMEs rating,
    • promoting technology enhancement and innovation in business, where she was involved various programmes for development of innovative SMEs such as the ‘Green LED Programme’ and the ‘1-InnoCERT Programme’.
    • Other areas under her portfolio include Branding, Skills Upgrading, Entrepreneurship and the promotion of Business Linkages which facilitates the SMEs’ market access to larger companies and the MNC supply chain.

    She was also the member of a number of Councils and Committees such as, the APEC SCSC, Malaysian National Standards Committees, Advisory Panel of Halal Industry Development Corporation Sdn. Bhd. (HDC) and also sits as Alternate Member at the Board of Director of Human Resources Development Board (PSMB).

    Prior to her SME Corp/SMIDEC stint, she served in the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment as Head of the Information Services at MASTIC, and from 2000 as Director of MASTIC, where she was recognised for her expertise in science and technology (S&T) indicators (OECD methodologies) and was instrumental in the development of the national S&T Database and knowledge resources (KRSTE.my), before continuing her service in April 2007 at SMIDEC as the Director or Enterprise Development and Entrepreneurship.

    Prior to that, Eliza was the Vice President and director at Teak Capital Sdn. Bhd. (teakcapital.com.my). Teak Capital is a venture capital firm focusing on ICT and technology type of investments, founded in October 2008. She was also an angel investor and director of Slashes and Dots Sdn. Bhd (www.jomsocial.com).

    Today, she is still active in deal sourcing, investing and coaching companies not just in ICT but other types of businesses as well. She has many years of experience in software engineering, technology evangelism, business and product development and Intellectual Property at Microsoft, Intel, Multimedia University and Telekom Malaysia.

    She holds a degree in Electrical Engineering and a minor in Mathematics from the University of Washington, Seattle, USA. She is currently a PHD in Information System candidate at University Teknologi Malaysia.

    Nadiah is currently the Human Resources Director of Experian Malaysia. Experian is the leading global information services company, providing data and analytical tools to clients around the world. She originally started off as a human resources generalist before falling in love with the world of Organisation Development and Change Management after trying her hands on training and development. She realised that she really loves being at the core of what affects people and organisation, and this has been the central motivation of her career path.

    As the Human Resources Director of Experian Malaysia and being in a very dynamic environment where the business is growing rapidly within a very vulnerable business environment and where the majority of the employees are of Gen Y, her challenge is to constantly keep the employee engagement high. Achieving the right balance between keeping the business going and managing a multi-generational group of employees is crucial. This is where her role in strategic human resources comes into play as she is involved in driving organisational change with focus on Culture, Leadership and Talent Management Initiatives. She is often sought after for her very open and broad perspectives in taking her diversified past experiences to human resources strategies.

    Nadiah is passionate about travelling, new experiences and culture. Her first Bungy jump was at the World’s 1st Commercial Bungy Jump in Kawarau, Queenstown, New Zealand. Next on her list is sky-diving!

    Salika SuksuwanCurrently on secondment to TalentCorp, Salika leads key projects to optimise Malaysian talent and to grow TalentCorp’s client network, which includes initiatives to increase women’s participation in the Malaysian workforce.

    Salika has a breadth of experience in Human Resources (HR), and has played key roles in numerous HR projects and initiatives. Prior to joining PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Salika held HR positions in a global management consulting firm and a foreign bank. She was also seconded to Bangkok and Singapore, to work on a merger integration project and facilitate a global human resource management system (HRMS) deployment project for Southeast Asia.

    Salika has a keen interest in resourcing and employer branding, and has established herself as a specialist in these areas. Guided by her extensive experience in talent acquisition, Salika has successfully led PwC Malaysia to win the Graduate Employer of the Year award for 3 years. Salika is also a member of the Industry Advisory Panel for University of Malaya. She is a graduate of the University of Warwick, UK.

    Head, Technology Programme Development, Technology Hub Development Division, Cyberview

    Shafinaz is the Head of Technology Programmes Development under Technology Hub Development Division in Cyberview Sdn Bhd, a government-owned company entrusted to elevate Cyberjaya into a global technology hub. Her capacity in Cyberview is to lead and oversee the industry development programmes on the identified technologies for Cyberjaya. Prior to joining Cyberview, she was with Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) for more than 10 years in various capacities. Her vast experience includes strategy and planning, investment promotions, assessment of multiple software technologies and solutions, technopreneurs and enterprises capability development, and managed more than 100 clients at one time from local Start-Ups, LLCs to technology MNCs. She was also in Business Development to the IT arm of Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange back in late 1990s. Shafinaz graduated in Business and Marketing Research from University of Arizona, Tucson USA.

    In her spare time, she enjoys gardening (especially herbs) and cooking, of which some herbs from her garden are used for her cooking ingredients.

    Talent Acquisition, Experian Singapore

    Amrita is a Talent Acquisition professional with over 11 years experience in building and leading high performing, commercially focused resourcing partnerships within the Technology and Financial Services sectors on a global level. Her Talent Acquisition leadership experience spans greenfield/start up environments, to successful turnarounds and high performing, recognized centers of excellence.

    Amrita started her career by joining the founding team at Globallogic, a leading software product engineering firm in Delhi, India where she was mainly responsible for driving the campus recruitment strategy. She later moved to Sydney, Australia and joined the world’s leading IT Advisory firm Gartner where she rose through the ranks working on assignments as part of the Global HR team. In 2009, she became the Recruitment Lead for APAC, the fastest growing region for Gartner. During her seven and a half years at Gartner, she successfully built a globally consistent recruiting framework that supported the corporate growth strategy and business objectives. She was also instrumental in identifying fundamental principles of Recruitment Strategy with a goal to increase quality, quantity and diversity of hires, resulting in significant overall cost savings in the region.

    Most recently, Amrita did a short stint at Blackberry’s global recruitment team in Singapore as the Head of recruitment for the APAC region where she was responsible for defining and executing Recruitment Strategy to align with key business drivers, strategy, goals and values of the company.

    Currently, Amrita heads the talent acquisition function for APAC at Experian Plc in Singapore and is focused on identifying fundamental principles of recruiting strategy with a goal to increase quality, quantity and diversity of hires. Amrita holds Bachelors‘ degree in commerce and an MBA.

    Poh-Ling specialises in bridging the gap between business requirement and technology implementation, often focusing on the people impact and input to solutions rather than just the technology. Her objectives are to achieve high client satisfaction through meeting project outcomes and earning the trust of her clients, based on successfully delivering her commitments to them.
